Gender Equity Workshop

As part of WHOI's Gender Equity Program, the Institution has contracted with Dr. Bernice Sandler to assist us in developing an on-going education program. The first phase of this program, which is nearing completion, involves a workshop on "An Introduction to the Chilly Climate". This workshop was offered multiple times in 2004, and the present workshop is open to any WHOI employee who was unable to participate previously.

In beginning to consider the issues, Dr. Sandler was asked to provide us with a definition of a "chilly climate" for women in the workplace. Her response was: "Although most people try to treat everyone fairly, many of us --- men and women alike -- often inadvertently treat women differently in many small ways. For example, women are interrupted more often, receive less eye-contact and are included less in professional interactions. Males are called upon more often in meetings, classrooms, and in ordinary conversation.

These myriad small behaviors are often unnoticed by the people who engage in them and by women themselves. Taken by themselves, these behaviors may have a minuscule effect, if any at all. Yet when these behaviors happen again and again, and especially if they are not recognized or understood, they often have a damaging cumulative effect, creating an environment that is indeed chilly -- an environment that dampens women's self-esteem, confidence, aspirations, learning and participation. Although the chilly climate certainly includes overtly discriminatory behaviors which are more easily recognized, it is the more subtle behaviors that will be explored in the workshops."
