Dr. Ambrose Jearld, Jr. was awarded the Emmeline Moore Prize

Torrie Andrade-WetzelThis award recognizes the efforts of an individual AFS member who has demonstrated exemplary service to the cause of equal opportunity of access to higher education in fisheries and/or professional development in any of the disciplines of fisheries science or management. The award is named for Emmeline Moore, the first female President of AFS, who served from 1927 to 1928. Recipient, Ambrose Jearld, Jr. National Marine Fisheries Service, Northeast Fisheries Science Center. Dr. Jearld is currently the Director of Academic Programs for the Northeast Fisheries Science Center. In this previous positions as a scientist and administrator, Dr. Jearld has been a leader in efforts to make the science community more inclusive. He has been active in efforts to recruit, support, and mentor young scientists from all backgrounds, with special emphasis on students from backgrounds under-represented in fisheries science and management. Dr. Jearld’s success is illustrated by the Woods Hole Partnership Education Program (PEP), a multi-institution program that brings undergraduates from around the country to Woods Hole for a summer of course work and research experience. Under his leadership, in its first three years, this Program has brought 45 students to Woods Hole, many from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
